Ecotones: the ecology of edges
Frederic Clements coined the word in 1904, combining eco- (already a prefix from “ecology,” itself rooted in the Greek oikos, home) with the Greek tonos (tension). An ecotone is where homes pull against each other. Not a wall, not a gap. A zone where two ecosystems press close enough to argue.
I’ve been reading ecology papers for a few months now, and the concept that keeps stopping me is the edge effect. Aldo Leopold gave it a name in 1933 in Game Management; Eugene Odum popularized and systematized the idea in his 1953 textbook, but field biologists had noticed it long before either of them. The boundary between two ecosystems supports more species than either system alone. A forest-grassland ecotone, sometimes only a few meters wide, packs shade-tolerant ferns and sun-loving grasses into the same strip. White-tailed deer bed in the timber and browse in the open. Red-tailed hawks favor the transition line, hunting from elevated perches where forest gives way to open ground. And then there are the edge species, organisms that exist only in the boundary itself, adapted to conditions that neither the forest interior nor the open grassland can offer. The indigo bunting nests preferentially in edges and brushy disturbed habitats. Certain fungi fruit only where canopy gives way to light.
The ecotone is not a blend. This is the part I had wrong for a long time. I assumed edges were gradient zones, a slow fade from one thing into another, like mixing paint. They aren’t. The ecotone generates its own community with its own structure. It is a third thing.
The philosophical neighbors
I wrote a piece earlier about ma, the Japanese concept of intervals as active presence. The space between notes that makes music possible. Ecotones sit in similar territory but arrive from a completely different direction. Where ma begins in aesthetics and perception (the empty scroll, the silence in Noh theater), the ecotone begins in population counts and species surveys. One is felt. The other is measured. They converge on the same claim: what happens between things is often more alive than what happens inside them.
Walter Benjamin and Asja Lacis made a version of this argument about Naples in 1925, though they weren’t thinking about ecology. Their essay in the Frankfurter Zeitung describes the city’s volcanic tuff as materially porous, riddled with caves and passages, which produces architecturally porous buildings (courtyards that are half-room, half-street, stairways with no fixed function), which in turn produces socially porous life. “No situation appears intended forever, no figure asserts its ‘thus and not otherwise.’” In Naples, there are no interior zones. The whole city is edge.
Benjamin’s porosity takes the ecotone idea and stretches it until it breaks open. An ecotone presupposes two intact systems pressing against each other. Porosity dissolves that presupposition. There’s no forest side and no grassland side. There’s only membrane, all the way through.
I find this beautiful and, I think, somewhat misleading.
Where the metaphor fails
Here’s my plainly-stated opinion: the ecological version of edge-thinking is more honest than the philosophical one, because it insists on a constraint that the humanities keep forgetting.
Odum’s edge effect only works between intact ecosystems. A forest-grassland ecotone is generative because the forest is healthy forest and the grassland is healthy grassland. Each system pushes its own logic to its own limit, and the tension between those limits creates the fertile boundary. Take that same forest and clearcut half of it. You’ve created an edge. But this edge doesn’t generate. It destroys. The new boundary exposes interior species to wind and desiccation. Light penetration changes the understory for up to several hundred meters in. Invasive species colonize the wound. Nest predation increases because crows and jays, edge-adapted predators, suddenly have access to deep-forest songbird nests that were previously unreachable.
In fragmented landscapes, the evidence for negative edge effects is severe. The Atlantic Forest of Brazil has been reduced to roughly 12% of its original cover under stricter forest definitions (newer remote-sensing methods put the figure higher), most of its fragments smaller than 50 hectares. In these remnants, edges don’t enrich. They hollow out. A 2003 study of Amazonian fragments found that patches of 100 hectares can lose half their bird species within 15 years, and the losses concentrate among interior specialists. The generalists survive. The creatures that needed depth disappear.
So the rule is: edges between whole systems create. Edges imposed on broken systems consume.
I spent a couple of years drawn to threshold thinking (liminality, ma, Derrida’s hostipitality) without noticing this constraint. The humanities versions of in-betweenness tend to celebrate the boundary as such, as if standing between things is always where the action is. The ecological evidence says otherwise. The boundary is generative only when both sides are substantial enough to sustain the tension. An ecotone between a vibrant forest and a parking lot isn’t an ecotone. It’s a wound with weeds.
I should have caught this sooner. The cost of missing it was a kind of lazy liminality in my own thinking, a habit of treating in-betweenness as inherently productive without asking what the adjacent systems were made of. That’s comfortable but empty. Like praising interdisciplinarity without checking whether the disciplines involved have any depth.
Mētis and the intelligence of edges
Marcel Detienne and Jean-Pierre Vernant recovered the Greek concept of mētis in their 1974 study of cunning intelligence. James Scott later borrowed the term for Seeing Like a State, but he narrowed it. Scott’s mētis is local, practical knowledge that resists bureaucratic legibility. The fisherman who reads the current, the farmer who knows which corner of the field drains poorly. Detienne and Vernant’s original is broader. Mētis is the intelligence suited to situations that shift, that resist fixed measurement, that require you to adapt in real time. Odysseus has it. The octopus has it (they use the octopus as a recurring figure). The wrestler who feels the moment to reverse has it.
What strikes me now is that ecotone species are mētis organisms. They’ve evolved for conditions that fluctuate. The edge between forest and grassland moves with drought cycles, fire regimes, grazing pressure. An edge species can’t optimize for stability because its habitat is constitutionally unstable. It optimizes for reading the shift.
This maps onto the other threads in ways I’m still working out. Ma is temporal mētis: the intelligence of knowing when the interval matters. Porosity is spatial mētis: the intelligence of structures that stay responsive. The ecotone is ecological mētis: the intelligence of organisms that live in tension between systems rather than inside one.
Whether mētis is actually the concept that connects all of these or whether I’m just pattern-matching because I want a unifying thread, I’m not sure. The temptation to find the ur-concept is strong, and I don’t fully trust it. Sometimes things rhyme without sharing a root.
What the constraint costs
But I keep coming back to the constraint, because I think it’s the part with real consequences.
If generative edges require intact adjacent systems, then the project of living in the in-between demands more than comfort with ambiguity. It demands that you build and maintain the systems you’re standing between. The bilingual writer who produces work that neither language could generate alone still needs deep fluency in both. The researcher working between ecology and philosophy still needs serious training in each. The ecotone that generates new species still needs the forest to be forest and the grassland to be grassland.
Clements’s etymology holds. Eco- plus tonos. The home-root buried inside the prefix, plus tension. You can’t have productive tension between homes that have collapsed. And you can’t build a home in the tension alone. The indigo bunting nests at the forest edge, but it nests in branches.
I’ve been wondering lately whether the current enthusiasm for boundary-crossing, for interdisciplinarity and hybridity and liminality as values in themselves, sometimes mistakes a fragmented landscape for a rich one. In a fragmented landscape, everything is edge. But it’s the destroying kind. The question that keeps sitting with me, that I don’t have an answer for, is how you tell the difference from inside.
